Spring Arrivals: A Guide to Seeing the New Forest Foals Safely

There is no sign of spring quite as iconic as the first sight of a New Forest foal finding its legs. As we move into mid-April, the forest is waking up, and the first wave of “new arrivals” has officially hit the plains.

If you are visiting us this month, you’re in for a treat. However, seeing these wobbly-legged newcomers requires a bit of “forest-sense.” Here is your guide to experiencing the magic of foal season while keeping the animals—and yourself—safe.

Where to Spot the New Arrivals

While the ponies roam free across the entire National Park, certain areas are legendary for spring sightings:

  • Beaulieu Rails: The wide-open heathland here offers great visibility, making it easier to spot foals from a distance without accidental surprising them.

  • Hatchet Pond: A beautiful backdrop for photography, but remember that this is a high-traffic area. The ponies here are used to people, but they still need their space.

  • Latimer Woods: For those looking for a quieter stroll, the sheltered edges of the woods often provide a windbreak for mothers and their young.

The New Forest Safety Code

We want everyone to enjoy the wildlife, but it’s important to remember that these are semi-wild animals. New mothers can be incredibly protective.

  1. The 92-Metre Rule: That’s about five bus lengths. It sounds like a lot, but giving a mare and foal this much space prevents the mother from becoming stressed or defensive.

  2. No Touching, No Feeding: It’s tempting, but feeding ponies teaches them to approach cars and people, which leads to accidents. Plus, human food can make them very ill.

  3. Watch the Body Language: If a pony’s ears go back or they turn their rear toward you, you are too close. Move away slowly and quietly.

Local Tip: April weather in the forest can be unpredictable! If you’re heading out pony spotting, wear sturdy boots. The heathlands can be surprisingly boggy after April showers.

Make a Weekend of It

Spring is arguably the most beautiful time to stay in the New Forest. The crowds are thinner than in summer, the gorse is in full yellow bloom, and the pub gardens are finally opening their umbrellas.

Help Us Protect the Forest

By choosing to visit and stay locally, you are helping to maintain the delicate ecosystem that allows these ponies to thrive. When you’re out and about, please remember to Take Your Litter Home and Drive Slowly—foals have no road sense and can dart out unexpectedly.
