The trusty servant, Minstead

3 Circular Spring Walks That End at a Great New Forest Pub Garden

3 Circular Walks That End at a Great New Forest Pub Garden

There is a specific kind of magic in the New Forest during mid-April: the gorse is blooming in vibrant yellows, the ancient woodlands are turning a fresh, bright green, and—crucially—it is finally warm enough to sit outside.

If you’re looking to earn your lunch this weekend, we’ve curated three circular walks that combine the best of the forest’s scenery with a well-deserved seat in a classic pub garden.

1. The Village Loop

The Route: Minstead & Furzey Circular

The Pub: The Trusty Servant, Minstead

While many visitors head to the famous Knightwood Oak (a 5-minute drive away), the best way to experience this area on foot is starting in Minstead. This loop takes you through the winding lanes and ancient pasture woodlands that surround one of the forest’s most “secret” villages. Keep an eye out for newborn foals on the village green!

  • The Garden: The Trusty Servant overlooks the village green (and the local stocks!). It’s the quintessential forest setting for a sunny afternoon.

  • The Food: Famous for their hearty, locally sourced pies and generous Sunday roasts.

  • Distance: Approximately 3.5 miles (Easy terrain, but can be muddy near the streams).

2. The Coast & Creek Adventure

The Route: Keyhaven Marshes & The Solent Way

The Pub: The Gun Inn, Keyhaven

For a change of pace, swap the trees for the salt marsh. April is peak birdwatching season along the Keyhaven Nature Reserve. This flat loop offers panoramic views of Hurst Castle and the Needles on the Isle of Wight. The sea air in spring is incredibly refreshing.

  • The Garden: The Gun Inn is a historic 18th-century “smugglers” pub with a wonderful, sun-drenched garden and a focus on high-quality local ingredients.

  • The Food: It’s the perfect spot for local seafood or a crab sandwich after a walk along the sea wall.

  • Distance: 4 miles (Flat, gravel paths; very accessible).

3. The Secret Pond & Open Heath

The Route: Eyeworth Pond & Fritham Circular

The Pub: The Royal Oak, Fritham

This is the ultimate walk for those seeking wide-open spaces. Start at the tranquil Eyeworth Pond—look out for the Mandarin ducks that nest here in spring—before heading up onto the high heathland of the Northern Forest. The views here are vast, and it’s a prime spot for seeing the New Forest ponies with their young.

  • The Garden: The Royal Oak is legendary. It’s a rustic thatched cottage with a massive garden filled with wooden benches and plenty of space for dogs.

  • The Food: They are famous for their Ploughman’s lunches featuring local New Forest cheeses and chutneys.

  • Distance: 4.5 miles (Moderately hilly with some steady inclines).
